1952 ROBERT AUSTIN JARRELL, Born 1897
in Augusta, Ga., died 1973 in Ft~ Lauderdale, Fla. Raised to degree of Master
Mason in 1946 in Doric Lodge No.140, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., demitted to Seminole
Lodge No. 304 in 1952. Occupation - Gas Fitter. Master of Lodge at age 55. IN MEMORY - W. Bro. Robert
Austin Jarrell died May 6, 1973 in Ft. Lauderdale Fla. To all who knew him, he
was either "Mose " or “Uncle Mose” II Jarrell. W. Bro. Mose had
the subtle ability of persuasion to which few were immune. Seemingly, what Mose
wanted, Mose got! Freemasonry was a great part of his life. Early in the 1960's
he was presented the KNIGHT OF THE YORK CROSS, a coveted award, awarded to those
who have held the principle office of BLUE LODGE and all the bodies of the YORK
RITE. He served as Master of Memorial
Lodge (more about Memorial Lodge later) for 5 or 6 years, performing the Masonic
Funeral Service on average 90 times per year.
Sometime during the late 1960's he and his wife, the late Reverend
Frances Jarrell, formed the UNITY CHURCH in Pompano Beach Florida. Together, she
the Minister and he the promoter, organized and built the Church and building. W. Bro. Mose also served two or
more terms as Worthy Patron of the ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR. His "folksy - back
home" manner of expression and subtle humor will be remembered by all who
knew him. There are many who were capable
of forming our new Lodge but few could have accomplished it with same
equanim1ty. HISTORICAL NOTE -The official attire for Officers of our Lodge, I and most Lodges in the District, was summer tuxedo (white; formal jacket, black bow tie, and black stripe trouser) however, soon after being chartered someone suggested bright Seminole Indian shirts and soon we were most colorful. The shirts attracted favorable attention but were abandoned because they were poorly stitched, not fast colors, and quite expensive HISTORICAL NIGHT - Monday evening, Feb. 8, 1952, Seminole Lodge raised their first class of Master Masons. They were: Howard Osma McElhaney Herman Edward Quinn George Richardson Glenn Kent Stuart The Worshipful Master authorized
and directed that the Senior and Junior Wardens take these candidates to dinner
before the meeting, at the Lodges expense, a
practice that was to continue for next several years. Historical NOTE - At Worshipful
Masters suggestion, the Lodge promoted the first social affair, held Oct. 13,
1952, referred to as "Ladies Night", where the wives and Mothers of
Lodge members were entertained while we conducted short meeting, after which a
get-acquainted social party was enjoyed by all. This type of social affair has
been held from time to time frequently taking form of covered dish dinner. |
